The Federal High Court in Sokoto on Wednesday granted bail to one Habiba Ladan arraigned for allegedly employing the services of a 12-year old as domestic servant.

Filed by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on behalf of the Federal government, Mrs Ladan is accused of employing an under aged kid as domestic servant, which is an offence liable to six months and not more than seven years imprisonment on conviction.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence and her lawyer, Barrister Ibrahim Abdullahi made an oral application for bail since according to him, “she has been under administrative bail by NAPTIP and has satisfied all the conditions of her administrative bail. She will not hesitate to meet up with whatever conditions that might be attached to her bail by this Court.”

The prosecuting counsel, Barrister Hassan Tahir who described the suspect as cooperative did not object to the bail application and Justice Rilwanu Aikawa granted Habiba bail in the sum of N1 million and one surety in like sum.

He added that the surety, who must be a civil servant under the Sokoto state government, must also be on grade level 12.

Aikawa also directed the suspect to sign an undertaking that she would not jump the bail.

The case was adjourned to February 11, 2016 for continuation of hearing.
