The Sokoto state Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) has fixed March 12, 2016 for the conduct of local government elections.
This was made known by the Chairman of the Commission, Usman Abubakar in a Press release signed and issued on Thursday.
According to him, the new date was arrived at after all arrangements for the conduct of the elections had been concluded.
“Having completed all arrangements on the conditions given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), our Commission resolved to, having met with all political parties, slate 12th March 2016 to conduct the local government elections,” the state read in parts.
He explained that the new date was arrived at in order “to give us ample opportunity to train our adhoc staff thoroughly for a hitch-free and smooth running of the elections.”
Abubakar appealed to all political parties, stakeholders and civil society organisations “to accord the Commission the necessary support and cooperation in order to conduct a free, fair and credible elections that will be acceptable to all.”
It would be recalled that the elections, earlier scheduled to hold on January 9, 2016 was postponed to an indefinite date “due to non-availability of Card Readers.”
