The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Col. Hameed Ali has assured Nigerians that all anomalies in Customs Service would be corrected and the lost glory, restored.
Addressing Officers and men of the Service during familiarization tour at the headquarters of the Sokoto/Kebbi/Zamfara Area Command in Sokoto on Tuesday, the CGC warned that issues roaming round indiscipline and corruption would be dealt with thoroughly.
”No more act of indiscipline will be condoned because it is something without which there will be no progress.
“There will also be zero tolerance to corruption. You are the mirror of the country. You are the first contact of anyone who visits this country. What you reflect on the mirror is the picture you give of the nation,” Ali said waring, “Any body who compromises shall hold himself to blame because I will not blink my eyes in order to ensure change in the service.”
He stressed that improvement on conduct of officers and men was panacea to the dwindling revenue generation efforts.
The CGC further said that he would address cases of junior officers that were wrongly promoted to take charge of senior officers.
“No such thing will continue. Cases of wrongful promotion, posting and recruitment, which are done to favour friends and relatives would be dealt with. All officers and men of the customs are answerable to the Service, which deems fit where to post you; who to recruit and who to promote,” Ali said.
He said that henceforth, passed courses would determine who gets promoted.
Earlier, the Acting Comptroller in charge of the Area Command, Deputy comptroller Muhammad Abdurrahman said that because of the many illegal routes that lead to Benin and Niger Republics, the Command had continued to seize “use vehicles, narcotics, drugs, foreign rice, mosquito coil and other goods.”
He complained that in spite of the fact that the Command is among one with the largest area, “our operational logistics are still inadequate to enable us cover our operational jurisdiction.”
Abdurrahman solicited for more support in the areas of patrol vehicles, motorcycles, communication gadgets for effective operations along the borders.
