The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Sokoto on Tuesday dismissed a petition brought before it by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives candidate, Alhaji Aminu Abubakar against the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki.
The petition was filed on April 17, 2015 against the declaration of the Independent National Electoral (INEC) that Abdussamad, son of the 18th Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki, won the House of Representatives election for Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal constituency with 70,653 votes.
Abubakar, who is son of Nigeria’s former Finance Minister and former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Abubakar Alhaji Abubakar, polled 13,350 votes in the election, which petition was dismissed for lack of merit by the tribunal chairman, Justice Anselem Nwaige.
The petitioner cited cases of
irregularities and non compliance with the Electoral Act, 2010, as amended.
In his judgment however, Anselem declared that “the election of the first respondent, Dasuki, was conducted in substantial compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2010, as amended, as well as the INEC manual for the 2015 general elections. The petition has failed and it is hereby accordingly dismissed.”
The two other members of the
Tribunal are Justices Elijah Ogbogu and Mohammed Abdullahi.
